National Grid's 2026 Substation Engineer Advanced Apprenticeship is a three-year, full-time programme that trains you to become a substation technician working across the North East London region. You will receive a starting salary of £24,306 while training and undertake a mix of on-site work on live transmission equipment and classroom courses at the Global Technical Training Centre of Excellence.
Training includes maintenance and repair of high-voltage substation equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, batteries and auxiliary systems. You will work towards a Level 3 EAL Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering Technologies and gain structured on-the-job development and a Personal Development Plan.
The programme includes significant residential training at the Eakring Training Centre (typically Monday-Thursday in year one), decreasing in residential time across years 2 and 3. This role is for practical, safety-focused people with an engineering mindset. Applicants must have five GCSEs (including Maths and English at grade 4/C or above), be able to travel and live within a 45-minute drive of E5 9QY, be able to obtain a UK driving licence by the end of year one, and have the legal right to work in the UK.
Assessment centres run Jan-Apr 2026 with a cohort start date of 7 September 2026.
