Fancy testing your biology skills beyond the classroom? Take the Intermediate Biology Olympiad to challenge yourself with real exam-style papers, build problem-solving and exam confidence, and stand out on uni or job applications—supervised by your school or college.
The Intermediate Biology Olympiad is an annual biology competition for students in the first year of post-16 education. It is designed to challenge strong students who want to extend their understanding beyond the classroom, while still being accessible to schools and colleges that can supervise the competition on site.
Students complete two 35-minute papers online. The questions are based on biology topics likely to have been covered at GCSE and in the first year of A level, with additional problem-solving and reasoning challenges included.
The competition is taken under normal examination conditions and must be invigilated in person by the registering school or college. Registration is handled by teachers through a UKBC account. Only recognised educational institutions can enter candidates, and students must sit the papers on the physical premises of their own school or college.
E-certificates are awarded across several categories, including Gold, Silver, Bronze, Highly Commended, Commended and Participation.

Location
- Only recognised educational institutions may register students.
- Students must be in the first year of post-16 education: Year 12 in England and Wales, Year 13 in Northern Ireland, S5 in Scotland, or equivalent year groups worldwide.
- Students must be enrolled as full-time students at the registering institution.
- Students must sit the competition under the direct supervision of staff from that institution.
- Students must complete the paper on the physical premises of the school or college at which they are enrolled.
- Remote invigilation is not permitted.
- Private tutoring companies, tuition centres, online-only tuition providers, university admissions or counselling organisations, organisations that do not provide full-time education, and individuals acting independently of a recognised school or college may not register candidates or act as examination centres.
- Institutions may only register their own enrolled students unless authorised by UK Biology Competitions.
- Candidates may not be entered through a third party, even if supervision is offered.
