Buxton Opera House (BOH Creates) runs a two-week work experience placement that gives young people a behind-the-scenes look at how a theatre operates and how shows are programmed. The programme combines practical, hands-on work in acting or technical theatre with opportunities to speak to staff across departments and learn a range of production skills.
In week one participants specialise as either actors (working with a professional director, including a workshop audition) or in technical, stage management and design roles (learning lighting, sound, set and costume work). In week two participants take a small-scale performance into the community and perform at local venues and at Buxton Fringe Festival.
The placement requires full availability for both weeks and some travel to tour venues may be by public transport.
Applications are competitive; selection includes audition/interview. Applicants must live within a 30-mile radius of Buxton Opera House and be in Years 10–13 (or homeschooled equivalent). The programme is supported by The Bingham Trust.
