The Richard III Society Essay Prize 2026 invites students to submit well-researched and referenced essays on the theme "The Life and Times of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, Richard III, 1452-1485. " Essays may interpret the topic broadly, considering political influence, social conditions in 15th-century England, international relationships, marriage policy, and related subjects.
Submissions in NEA, EPQ, IB Extended Essay or closely similar formats are acceptable. Entrants must be students under the age of 19 on 31 August 2026. Essays should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words and submitted as a PDF.
The prizes are £200 (first), £100 (second) and £50 (third). Submissions are checked for plagiarism and the use of AI; shortlisted essays are anonymised before assessment. To enter, send your essay as a PDF to essay@richardiii.
net and include the name of your school, your History teacher and their contact email. The organisers provide topic guidance on the website and welcome a wide range of historically grounded approaches to the subject matter.
