Fancy uncovering 350 million years of Earth in a day? Join Lithosphere Expeditions’ Peak District field day to explore fossils, search quarry faces and safely enter historic mines. Build rock ID skills, boost your uni/career profile and connect with geoscience pros.

Lithosphere Expeditions runs full-day geology field experiences in the Peak District that explore 350 million years of Earth history. On a typical geology walk you will examine coral fossils in limestone walls, trace ancient river paths through gritstone layers, and visit disused lead mines and quarry faces that expose local geological structure.

A typical day includes cave or mine exploration (where safe and permitted), outcrop visits, hands-on rock and mineral identification, and geological map reading. Walks are chosen to showcase contrasting landscapes where limestone meets gritstone, with popular routes around Castleton, Eyam, Stoney Middleton and Lathkill Dale.

Most walks cover between 5 and 10 kilometres at a gentle pace with frequent stops to examine features; routes and difficulty can be tailored to the group's needs. Full briefings and all necessary safety equipment are provided for underground sections.

The field days are open to anyone with a curiosity about the natural world - families, walking groups, amateur enthusiasts and geology students - and sessions can be adapted for different knowledge levels. The provider runs tailored sessions for GCSE and A-level geography students as well as university field trips and special interest groups.

Children aged 8 and over are explicitly welcome.
