The Veterinary Medicine, Zoology & Animal Sciences Summer Programme at Abbotsholme School is a two-week residential academic course that blends classroom theory, laboratory science and extensive hands-on animal experience. The programme provides structured study (approximately 30 hours per week) alongside practical sessions on a working school farm, offering a detailed introduction to animal anatomy, physiology, disease diagnostics, welfare and conservation.
Participants take part in laboratory work (microscopy, dissections, dosage calculations and case studies), small- and large-animal practicals (handling, health checks, husbandry) and specialist workshops such as equine care, emergency and critical care, and exotic/wildlife medicine. The course includes carefully selected educational excursions (animal rehabilitation centre, zoo/wildlife park) and a London weekend excursion with overnight accommodation, plus two evening networking sessions with animal professionals to provide industry insight.
Students live on campus in boarding accommodation (twin, triple or quad rooms) with full board and 24/7 pastoral supervision. Transfers from Heathrow and Gatwick are included within stated arrival/departure times.
The programme finishes with an end-of-course report and a certificate and offers guidance on university pathways, personal statement and interview preparation.
