Founder Zainab Mahmood unpacks why individual shopping choices can’t fix fashion’s deeper problems, tracing links between labour rights and climate justice and putting garment workers’ calls for fairer pay at the centre. Your ticket also opens access to an exhibition and workshop.

This talk explores ethical consumerism and questions whether individual shopping choices can really solve the fashion industry’s deeper problems. It examines systemic labour exploitation and environmental harm, and argues that meaningful change depends on structural action rather than placing the burden on consumers alone.

The session is led by Zainab Mahmood, founder of Ahista Stories. Drawing on her background in environmental politics and development, she looks at how fashion, labour rights and climate justice intersect, and why garment workers’ demands for fairer pay need to be central to any serious conversation about sustainability.

The talk is part of Ahista Stories Live, a South Asian sustainable fashion festival. Ticket holders can also access other festival content, including additional talks, an exhibition and a workshop, making it a broader cultural and ideas-led event for anyone interested in fashion, ethics and social change.

Tickets: £8 standard, £4 concession, or £12 pay it forward.
