Amigos de las Americas’ Costa Rica: La Pezeta (AMIGOS Discover) is a short, high-school summer volunteer program focused on community service, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange. Participants live with host families and in group housing while volunteering at a local environmental conservation reserve and visiting community entrepreneurship initiatives.
Typical activities include reforestation, trail and fence maintenance, nursery work, and leading youth and cultural activities in the community.
The program runs as 2-week sessions and is designed for high-school students seeking an introduction to travel and service abroad. Volunteers earn service hours (24 service hours on this 2-week project), receive daily support from project staff, and participate in pre-departure training plus health and safety webinars.
No prior Spanish experience is required, and accommodations include a mix of dorm-style lodging and homestays (2-3 volunteers per household).
Programs take place in the Pérez Zeledón region of Costa Rica (Quebradas Biological Center / San José Province). 2026 session fees are $4,675 (Local Chapter) or $4,975 (National Chapter); fees cover in-country expenses but do not include flights.
Applicants must meet health/immunization requirements and hold a passport valid six months after the project end date.
