Try work placements across council teams, from plumbing and joinery to planning, environmental services and lettings. Spend up to two weeks seeing how local services operate, with your placement depending on which departments can accommodate students.

Ashfield District Council offers work experience placements for school, college and university students who want to support their learning with workplace insight. The placements are designed to give participants a better understanding of how a local council operates and to help them sample a role before making decisions about their future studies or career path.

Placements are available in a range of departments, including tenancy services, plumbing, joinery, electrical, plastering, repairs administration, stores, office administration, environmental services, environmental enforcement, secretarial services, lettings services, and planning and building control. The council says work experience usually lasts for up to two weeks and may be in front-line or support service functions depending on what departments can accommodate in a given year.

The application process is completed online and must be done with support from a teacher or representative from the student's school or college. Applicants also need approval from their school or college before taking part.

The scheme is intended to help students build confidence, make a good impression on a potential employer, and develop their employability through practical experience in a public sector setting.
