Join the University of Liverpool for Asteroid Day 2026, an in-person public event celebrating asteroids and planetary science. The event brings together researchers and space enthusiasts for an afternoon of exhibits, hands-on demonstrations and a specialist talk.
It is suitable for newcomers and experienced stargazers alike and provides an opportunity to meet researchers from the Universitys Planetary Defence group. The programme opens with an exhibition from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM led by Dr Stefania Soldini (University of Liverpool).
Attendees can meet and greet researchers, explore exhibits, and take part in hands-on demonstrations showcasing planetary defence research and methods used to study small bodies in the Solar System. From 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM there is a talk titled "Trojans and Greeks: The Jovian Odyssey of NASAs Lucy Mission" by Duncan Lyster (University of Oxford).
The talk will cover Lucys encounters with Trojan asteroids, insights from the 2023 Dinkinesh flyby and its moon Selam, and how modelling flyby geometries helps determine physical properties of asteroids relevant to planetary defence. The event is held in person at the Foundation Building, University of Liverpool.
