Mercer & Hole's Audit Higher Apprenticeship Programme in St Albans offers structured on-the-job training within the firm's Audit department alongside formal study for AAT Level 3 and 4. Apprentices will work across a range of client sectors, carrying out audit tasks and learning financial and business skills under the guidance of senior staff.

The programme is organised into at least two years of development: Year 1 focuses on basic accounting and audit tasks such as preparing control accounts, calculating prepayments and accruals, updating fixed asset registers, and drafting basic financial statements. Year 2 builds on this foundation with preparation of more complex statutory accounts, more advanced audit testing, and opportunities to undertake small audits independently while supporting more junior trainees.

Apprentices are supported with training and development resources including a dedicated training manager, buddy scheme, trainee away days and study leave. Upon completion of the AAT qualification apprentices will have the opportunity to apply to progress onto ACA studies and continue toward becoming a chartered accountant.
