This Level 3 Operations Apprenticeship at AWE offers a paid, 36-month programme delivering hands-on experience across operations, manufacturing, science and engineering in a high-security, safety-critical environment. Apprentices rotate through operational areas, learning process and production work, practical laboratory analysis, administrative support tasks, and safety procedures relevant to explosives and other specialised areas.
You will develop practical skills (assembly, process monitoring, planning daily/weekly work and safe systems), gain exposure to technical trials (such as pulsed power experiments), and complete training delivered by Basingstoke College of Technology against the Process Industry Technician standard (ST1407). On completion apprentices are likely to move into operational business units or apply for roles across logistics, science and engineering.
The role requires successful occupational health clearance and security clearance; AWE funds the security clearance process. The programme includes mandatory inductions and a structured assessment process including online tests and an in-person assessment centre.

- Applicants must be aged 18 or over as of 31st August 2026 (security clearance requirement).
- Must be a British National (required for applying to roles at AWE).
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance (AWE will fund clearance).
- Residency requirements apply for different clearance levels (resident in the UK for the past 5 years for SC; 10 years for DV).
- Entry requirements: 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including Maths, English and Science.
- Must be willing and able to pass an Occupational Health pre-employment medical (includes requirement of BMI under 35 for roles requiring respiratory protection).
- Willingness and ability to work in designated (high-security) areas on site.
£16,750 per year
A starting salary of £16,750 per year, increasing to £23,500 in Year 2 and annually throughout the apprenticeship subject to milestones and performance. Market-leading contributory pension scheme, 270 hours annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays) plus every other Friday off, employee discounts, Employee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health services.
