Balkan Heritage Field School's Workshop for Architectural Conservation at the archaeological site of Stobi (near Gradsko, North Macedonia) is a two-week field school combining practical hands-on conservation, documentation, lectures and excursions. The program focuses on Roman and Late Roman masonry and provides participants with both theoretical instruction and applied experience in evaluating conservation problems, selecting materials, and undertaking preventive and interventive conservation on authentic archaeological structures.
The course is structured into practical fieldwork, lectures on construction techniques and conservation methods, and guided excursions to regional heritage sites. Participants will develop practical conservation and documentation skills, learn to recognize masonry pathology, and study traditional mortars and restoration techniques.
Instruction is delivered in English by experienced conservators and archaeologists; no prior experience is required.
The session includes full-board accommodation in site cabins, three meals per day, tools and materials, and academic credit options. Participants are responsible for their own international travel, visas (if applicable) and health/travel insurance.
Places are limited and selection is on a first-come basis until spots are filled.
6 ECTS credits available through New Bulgarian University (for eligible European students); Certificate of Attendance. IFR/Connecticut College credit option available via Institute for Field Research (separate enrollment).

Early-bird price for the two-week session: 3299 EUR (until Jan 31, 2026). Regular cost for the two-week session: 3599 EUR (after Jan 31, 2026). Fee (reimbursement payment) covers educational and fieldwork activities, full-board accommodation (three meals per day), tools and materials, project handbook/readings, certificate of attendance, administrative costs, travel related to included excursions, and entrance fees. Fee does NOT cover international travel to/from the site, personal insurance, medical costs, or extras. Discounts available (5%-15%) for repeat participants, group bookings, and certain memberships.
