Explore how promising athletes are identified, developed and supported in an online taster with a researcher. Using research in cricket, Olympic weightlifting and work with UK Sport, unpack how physical, psychological and social factors shape development - and why practice and challenge matter.
Join Dr Gavin Lawrence at Bangor University for an online taster session exploring how talent is identified, developed, and supported in sport. The session looks at why some promising young athletes progress while others struggle, and how coaches, parents, and sporting organisations can create environments that help talent flourish.
Drawing on research in cricket, Olympic weightlifting, and work undertaken in partnership with UK Sport, the talk examines how physical, psychological, and social factors interact to shape athlete development. It will also consider why the way athletes practise and experience challenge matters, with a focus on the ideas behind effective coaching and talent development.
This session is aimed at people interested in coaching, sport science, talent development, or sport psychology, and offers an insight into the kinds of research and thinking that inform performance pathways in elite sport.
