The hybrid lecture links these sites to BACSA’s work recording what remains, with attendance at Queen Square or online.
Dr Rosie Llewellyn-Jones explores the story of the British experience in the Indian sub-continent, with particular attention to the civilian graves and memorials left behind by the East India Company and later by those working under the British Raj. The talk reflects on how these burial places mark the lives, deaths and movements of Britons in India, where illness, warfare and accident often shortened lives dramatically.
The lecture also places this history in a wider cultural and commemorative context through the work of the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA), which was established to care for these sites and record what remains. Dr Llewellyn-Jones draws on her expertise in colonial India to show how these cemeteries and memorials form part of South Asia’s own history as well as the imperial past.
This is a BRLSI hybrid event, so you can attend in person at Queen Square or watch online. Tickets are required in advance, with separate member tickets available for BRLSI members.
