Curious how films shape what you expect on screen? Join a four-week online course to explore genre theory, watch clips and interviews, build critical skills, and connect with fellow learners - boost your film know-how for university or industry applications.

This is an introductory online course that explores what genre means in film and how genre shapes narrative, audience response and the film industry’s production and marketing decisions. Over four weeks you’ll study film-genre theory, trace the development of genres, and examine how genre expectations influence directorial and production choices.

The course uses a mix of short videos, interviews, film extracts and discussion alongside other learners to develop your critical understanding. Weekly topics include genre identification, genre and audiences, and the relationship between genre and the film industry.

It is practical in focus but grounded in film theory and illustrative examples.

The course is delivered on FutureLearn and was developed by the Film Distributors’ Association. It’s designed for anyone with a beginner’s interest in film and is particularly useful for students studying film at A-level or degree level.

A digital certificate of achievement is available when eligibility criteria are met.
