Join a BSc Planetary Science with Astronomy taster session at Birkbeck, University of London to discover how rocks record Earth’s history. The session begins with a guided tour of Birkbeck’s central London campus led by a student ambassador, giving prospective undergraduates a chance to ask questions about university life and studying at Birkbeck.
After the tour you will enter the petrology suite for a hands-on taster using state-of-the-art petrological microscopes. The session explores deep time, mineral chemistry, microstructures and how pressure and temperature affect rocks and their fabrics.
Participants will handle real rock samples and observe how thin sections reveal colours and textures not visible to the naked eye. The taster explains how studying Planetary Science with Astronomy equips students with scientific tools to investigate Earth and other worlds.
The course at Birkbeck is described as having flexible evening teaching, making it suitable for those considering part-time or evening study while progressing to undergraduate study.
