Join a two‑day, in‑person Bookbinding Design Workshop at The London Archives — collaborate with West Dean and the Society of Bookbinders, design bindings inspired by Philip Larkin, build practical skills and portfolio pieces to boost uni or career applications.
Join a two-day, in-person Bookbinding Design Workshop at The London Archives, run in collaboration with West Dean College’s FdA Books and Bindings programme and the London & South Region of the Society of Bookbinders. The workshop introduces design concepts for bookbinding and is intended both for practiced bookbinders and anyone interested in design binding.
Participants are asked to read the set text (Philip Larkin’s The Whitsun Weddings) in advance and will work from that text through the design process. West Dean tutors and recent FdA graduates will present approaches to design and demonstrate decorative techniques.
Across the two days participants will attend presentations and demonstrations (10:30-12:30 each day), then develop their own design ideas in practical afternoon sessions (1:30-4:00). All attendees will make a design plaquette to take home.
Basic tool availability is provided; bring any personal materials you prefer (coloured pencils, media, paring knife or scalpel handles). Lunch is not provided. The event is hosted at The London Archives (40 Northampton Road, London EC1R 0HB).
