Turn old clothing or fabric into a reusable handmade bag while learning safe sewing-machine use and basic construction skills. Bring a garment or fabric remnant to cut, assemble and finish your own bag.
This hands-on workshop invites teens to give old clothing or fabric a new lease of life by turning it into a reusable handmade bag. Participants will learn the basics of using a sewing machine and discover how everyday materials can be transformed into something practical, creative and sustainable.
The session is designed for beginners as well as those with some existing sewing experience. Young people will be guided through basic machine sewing techniques, safe sewing machine use, and simple construction skills as they cut, assemble and finish a bag from repurposed fabric or clothing.
Participants are asked to bring an old item of clothing or suitable fabric remnant to use in the workshop. The activity is part of a three-part teen upcycling series at Bradford Industrial Museum, and it focuses on building confidence, creativity and textile reuse skills.
