Prize: E-certificates (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Highly Commended, Commended, Participation). Top-scoring students will be invited to further training and assessments for UK Team Selection, with successful team members representing the UK at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) is an online problem-solving competition aimed at post-16 students (typically A-level / Y12-Y13). The BBO challenges students with biology problems and rewards top performers with publicly recognised e-certificates (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Highly Commended, Commended, Participation).

The papers assume knowledge of common A level biology topics but focus on applying principles to unfamiliar scenarios.

The competition in 2026 runs from 19 January to 28 January and consists of two 45-minute multiple-choice papers taken online under teacher-supervised examination conditions; papers may be taken together or separately. Teachers register and invigilate students via the UKBC exam portal; all students need access to an internet-connected device.

High-scoring students are invited to further practical and theoretical training and assessments as the first stage of selection for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
