Meet officers, police staff and volunteers from different teams, then explore how railway policing works through presentations, demonstrations, discussions, case studies and interactive exercises. Discover areas from forensics and police dogs to CCTV and force control rooms.

Closes 18 December 2026

British Transport Police’s Work Experience - Student Placement 2027 is an educational programme for young people interested in policing and the wide range of roles that support the safety of Britain’s railways. Participants meet officers, police staff and volunteers from different teams and learn how a national police force operates, with activities such as presentations, demonstrations, discussions, case studies and interactive exercises.

The placement is designed to give students an insight into areas such as forensics, firearms teams, police dogs, detectives, intelligence, contact centres, CCTV, custody, force control rooms, and the criminal justice system. Students do not carry out operational policing duties and are not placed in active operational environments.

The programme is delivered in groups alongside other young people.

It is aimed at students aged 14 to 17 who are in secondary school or college and can travel to the advertised location. Successful applicants are expected to attend the full placement, and alternative dates or bespoke arrangements are not offered.

The programme is unpaid, competitive, and places are limited.
