Shadow council teams for up to three days, join a short placement lasting four to ten days, or meet an expert one-to-one. Explore fields from digital services and construction to law, transport and environmental work; placements may also be remote.
Cardiff Council’s Work Experience Programme offers unpaid placements that give participants real-world experience within the largest local authority in Wales. It is designed to help young people and others explore working life, build confidence, and gain insight into a field of interest while supporting their studies and career goals.
Placements can take different forms depending on what is available and what the applicant needs. Examples include a one-to-one “meet the expert” session, work shadowing for up to three days, short-term placements lasting between four and ten days, and longer placements linked to studies or career aspirations that usually last no more than 30 days.
There are opportunities across a wide range of council services, including social services, construction, digital services, data analytics, environmental work, education, law, finance, transport, translation, and more. Some placements are remote, so you may need a device connected to the internet.
Applicants complete a request form, and the council will try to match them with a suitable placement, although places cannot be guaranteed.
Unpaid placement; participants must cover their own expenses.
