Professor Sara Heinämaa examines falling in love as abrupt and involuntary, while being in love is an enduring commitment. The online lecture explores how wonder challenges preconceptions in both; book through Eventbrite to receive a Zoom link.

The Royal Institute of Philosophy Cardiff Annual Lecture 2026 explores the distinction between two central modalities of love: falling in love and being in love. Professor Sara Heinämaa examines how these experiences differ in their temporality and volitional character, presenting falling in love as an involuntary, abrupt event and being in love as a more enduring commitment.

The lecture also considers the role of wonder in both forms of love, arguing that each involves a challenge to our preconceptions. It is designed for a broad audience and is open to the public, staff and students, making it suitable for anyone interested in philosophy, emotion, and human relationships.

The event takes place online, with booking via Eventbrite to receive a Zoom link on the day. It is part of Cardiff University’s public lecture programme and features Sara Heinämaa, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä.
