UKMT’s Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin Olympiads - two-hour maths challenge papers for Years 9-11 (different papers per year group). Entry by IMC qualification or discretionary purchase; competition date 19 March 2026.

The Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin Mathematical Olympiads are follow-on two-hour competitions to the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Each paper contains six Olympiad-style problems designed for different year groups (Cayley for Year 9 and below; Hamilton for Year 10; Maclaurin for Year 11).

Entry is by invitation for students who achieve a qualifying IMC score or through discretionary entry. Around 1,800 students typically qualify from the IMC each year. Schools register and purchase entries via the UKMT challenges portal.

Past papers, solutions and a Competition Handbook are available to help teachers prepare students. Accessibility options (Braille/large-print) can be ordered by the stated deadline. The main competition date for 2026 is Thursday 19 March 2026; time limit for the paper is two hours.

  • Entry to the Intermediate Olympiads is by invitation based on a qualifying Intermediate Maths Challenge (IMC) score, or by discretionary entry.
  • Cayley Maths Olympiad eligibility: England, Wales and Overseas: Year 9 and below; Scotland: S2 or below; Northern Ireland: Year 10 or below.
  • Hamilton Maths Olympiad eligibility: England, Wales and Overseas: Year 10; Scotland: S3; Northern Ireland: Year 11.
  • Maclaurin Maths Olympiad eligibility: England, Wales and Overseas: Year 11; Scotland: S4; Northern Ireland: Year 12.
