Help maintain a heritage railway in Essex, choosing from hands-on roles like gardening, woodwork and trackwork or trying signalling, catering and train operations. Fit volunteering around your availability after induction, with extra safety training provided free for some specialist roles.

Volunteering at the Colne Valley Railway gives people the chance to help preserve a heritage railway in Essex while learning new skills and meeting new people. The railway is maintained by volunteers, so support is needed across many areas to keep the site running and to protect local railway history for future generations.

There are lots of ways to get involved, from gardening, woodwork and trackwork to signalling, catering, customer-facing duties and train operations. Some volunteers use their existing career skills, while others join simply because they want to try something new or support a cause they care about.

The railway aims to be flexible, so volunteering can fit around your availability once you have completed the required induction and any necessary training. Membership is the first step, and certain specialist roles may need extra safety training provided at no cost.

The result is a practical, hands-on volunteering experience with opportunities to find a role that suits your interests.
