Earn while you learn: combine paid employment with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science at Ulster University (Magee campus) - employer-funded tuition, day-release study and practical industry experience starting Sep 2026.

This Degree Apprenticeship combines paid employment with university study to deliver a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science. Year 1 is delivered as accelerated learning (120 credits, attending campus four days per week with one day in the company).

After successful completion of Year 1, apprentices move to part-time attendance and study alongside employment.

Post Year 1 (Years 2-4) apprentices attend university one day per week and spend the remaining days working with their employer; modules are taught on campus with web-supplementation. The programme emphasises practical software engineering skills, programming, systems design, networks, security and a final year project to apply learning to real-world problems.

Degree Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes: apprentices must be in paid, permanent employment (minimum 21 hours/week) with an employer based in Northern Ireland. Tuition is funded by the Department for the Economy and apprentices are paid by their employer while studying.

The course is based at the Magee campus, Derry~Londonderry, and is industry endorsed and BCS-accredited.

  • Be a school leaver aged 16 or over
  • Be newly employed (less than 6 months before the start of the course) or about to take up employment on a permanent contract with a minimum of 21 hours per week
  • Have achieved the minimum academic entry qualifications for the course (see Standard Entry Conditions)
  • Pass any entry tests specified by the relevant sector
  • Have a right to live and work in the UK
  • You cannot participate if you are self-employed
  • Employer must have a permanent base in Northern Ireland
  • Employer must ensure apprentices are enrolled on UK/HMRC payroll and paid a wage commensurate with the role (not less than UK minimum wage)
  • Employer must not be a public sector employer
  • Applicants who already have a degree can participate only if the course is at a higher level than or unrelated to their previous qualification
  • Applicants employed for more than 6 months may be eligible if entering a new job role requiring new competences/knowledge
Pay & Benefits

Apprentices are paid as employees by their employer; tuition for Degree Apprenticeships is funded by the Department for the Economy. Employers must pay a wage commensurate with the role and not less than the UK minimum wage.
