Fancy turning snorkels into real research? Join Conservation Travel Africa in Mozambique to monitor whale sharks, manta rays and turtles, collect data, learn field skills, boost your CV and connect with scientists on hands-on marine conservation.

Conservation Travel Africa's Marine Conservation Volunteer Programme in southern Mozambique offers in-person, field-based volunteering focused on long-term monitoring and protection of marine megafauna such as whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales and endangered sea turtles. Volunteers collect population data, take ID photos, record behaviour and environmental conditions, maintain national databases, assist with tagging and length measurements, log dives and help analyse camera-trap and acoustic data.

Activities also include reef and estuary surveys, community visits and beach clean-ups.

The project runs year-round with recommended stays of 3-4 weeks to fully participate; a minimum 2-week stay is recommended and one-week placements are possible for already certified divers. Dive training (RAID Open Water and additional certifications) is provided where required and dive-focused volunteers typically undertake four research dives or snorkel safaris per week.

A 12-week Divemaster package is available for those seeking professional dive qualifications and extensive field experience.

Volunteers are accommodated in beachside lodges near Barra/Tofo (accommodation and three meals included). Return transfers from Inhambane Airport are provided; flights, visas and travel insurance are not included.

The programme is suitable for a wide adult age range (minimum solo traveller age 16) and combines practical conservation work with training and community engagement.
