The Cowrie Foundation Scholarship is offered by the University of Liverpool in partnership with the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation to support Black African and Caribbean heritage applicants from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds who are ordinarily resident in the UK and commencing undergraduate study in 2026/27. The award covers home UK tuition fees and provides a maintenance stipend of up to £8,000 per year, combining a Liverpool Bursary element and funding from the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation.

The stipend amount varies by household income band.

Applicants must have firmly accepted an offer to Year 0 or Year 1 of a full-time undergraduate degree at Liverpool and meet home fee-status and household income (£35,000 or less) criteria. The scholarship is competitive and tenable for the full length of the programme subject to satisfactory progression.

Applicants are assessed through a panel process with final decisions made by the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation in conjunction with the University.

  • Identify as Black or Black British – Caribbean, Black or Black British – African, Mixed - White and Black Caribbean, Mixed - White and Black African, or Other Black background.
  • Ordinarily resident in the UK and assessed (or expected to be assessed) as a 'home' fee-status student.
  • Have firmly accepted an offer of a place at the University of Liverpool to Year 0 or Year 1 of a full-time undergraduate degree programme starting in the 2026/27 academic year.
  • Have a household income of £35,000 per annum or less.
  • Have applied to the relevant regional student funding authority and expect to be in receipt of full financial support for 2026/27 (Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland or SAAS) and have given consent to share that information with the University.
  • This must be your first undergraduate degree and you must not have started a degree programme previously.

Pay & Benefits

The scholarship covers home UK tuition fees and a maintenance stipend of up to £8,000 per year. The maintenance stipend comprises the Liverpool Bursary plus an award of £6,000 per annum from the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation. Under the Liverpool Bursary, students with household incomes below £25,000 receive £2,000 (total stipend £8,000); students with household incomes between £25,001 and £35,000 receive £750 (total stipend £6,750). The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the programme, subject to satisfactory progression.
