Shape metal into a bowl using blocking out, hammering and planishing, then learn to use a forge and soften metal for shaping. You’ll build up to embossing and fold forming, creating leaf designs in copper.
This one-week spring workshop introduces you to the craft of silversmithing through hands-on making. You will learn how to stretch and form metal by making a bowl, using techniques such as blocking out, hammering and planishing.
You will also be taught how to use a forge and how to heat and soften the metal to shaping temperature.
As the course progresses, you will work with tools including a piercing saw, snips and files, then move on to embossing and fold forming. By combining the skills you have learnt, you will create leaf designs in copper, a material chosen for its beauty and malleability as well as its suitability for practising larger-scale work.
The workshop is designed for creative young people who want to develop practical craft skills and explore future pathways in creative, engineering and design-related careers. It is fully funded, limited to a small number of places, and expects participants to attend every day.
As part of The Creative Dimension Trust’s accreditation scheme, students on workshops of three days or more can receive a graded evaluation and written feedback.
TCDT accreditation grades: Working Towards, Pass, Merit or Distinction, with written evaluations for workshops running three days or more.
