Creative Writing in the Great Outdoors is a two-week Dartmouth Summer Scholars program based at Moosilauke Ravine Lodge that immerses high-school students in nature-led storytelling. Participants engage in daily outdoor writing sessions, guided hikes, genre workshops (poetry, narrative nonfiction, short fiction), peer workshops, and reading circles.
The course emphasises observation, sensory detail, and developing a sustainable creative practice. Students leave the program with a portfolio of original and revised work, instructor feedback, and a final showcase reading at the Lodge.
The course is taught by experienced instructors (notably Larry Olmsted, MA) and offers a university-level classroom experience with small interactive classes, field-based activities, and college-prep enrichment. Residential (boarding) and day (non-residential) attendance options are available for the July session.
Program tuition includes academic tuition, housing (for residential students), three daily meals, on-site supervision, transportation for included activities, linens for residential students, and access to campus facilities. International students receive visa support guidance, arrival assistance, and an international medical/health insurance policy as described.
