Get hands-on experience across a wide range of local government roles, with support and guidance throughout your placement. Build practical workplace skills, work collaboratively and contribute to meaningful community work while learning how local government operates.
Dorset Council’s Work Experience Programme offers placements that give participants hands-on experience and insight into a wide range of local government roles. It is designed for people at different stages of life, including students exploring career options, as well as adults who are returning to work or considering a change of direction.
The programme welcomes school students, college and university students, young adults who are not currently in education or work, and adults seeking a fresh start. Placements are intended to help participants build confidence, develop practical workplace skills, and learn more about how local government operates.
There are no formal entry requirements. Dorset Council says attitude matters most, with an emphasis on being willing to learn, working collaboratively, and approaching tasks responsibly. Participants can expect support and guidance throughout their placement, alongside the chance to contribute to meaningful work in the community.
