Some riding and competition grooming duties may be required depending on experience.

All training is delivered as part of the Equine Groom apprenticeship (Standard ST0166) and will take place at the workplace with employer support and Haddon Training. Training delivery is a mixture of face-to-face and online sessions.

Apprentices will receive regular training input from an equine vet and a BHSI Stage 5 Performance coach. Haddon Training can also support apprentices with maths and/or English if they do not currently hold pass grades.

Desirable qualifications include GCSE English and GCSE Maths (Grade 4). Key skills noted by the employer are communication, organisation, teamwork, initiative, patience and physical fitness. There may be opportunities to progress into more senior yard roles or into a higher level apprenticeship, and the candidate may work towards Pony Club or BHS exams alongside or after the apprenticeship.
