The Fabric Manipulation and Textile Embellishment Workshop is a one-day, in-person session focused on surface design techniques for textiles. Participants will explore fabric manipulation methods and a range of embellishment techniques including beading, embroidery, lace appliqué, ruching, smocking and quilting.
The session begins with a discussion of fabric types, fibre sources and construction techniques to inform design choices. Practical activities form the core of the workshop: attendees will try hand-based decorative techniques and produce samples demonstrating the methods taught.
Materials, beads, embroidery hoops, threads and scissors are provided, and students are welcome to bring any particular materials or embellishments they wish to use. By the end of the day participants will be able to produce fabric manipulation and embellishment samples using a variety of hand techniques.
The workshop is taught by designer John Herrera (tutor at FCFTA), who has shown collections at London and Paris Fashion Week and exhibited internationally. The session is suitable for textile artists, makers and designers looking to refine practical skills and build portfolio work.
