Ready to get hands-on and earn while you learn? Join GWR’s Engineering Apprentice scheme to service and repair trains, gain a Level 3 in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, access mentors, college study and real depot experience - with routes to an HNC and a career.

GWR's Engineering Apprentice scheme trains early-career technicians while they earn. Apprentices learn how to service, repair and respond to faults on the GWR fleet, working at a depot alongside study at college.

The programme includes a Level 3 qualification in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering and offers the chance to progress to an HNC, with each apprentice assigned a mentor for support.

Apprentices split time between depot-based practical training and college study. In year 2 there is the opportunity to enrol on the Duke of Edinburgh Business gold scheme. Typical previous placements have been in Reading, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance, though final locations for the 2026 cohort are being finalised.

Applicants must be over 16, live within one hour of their chosen location, and have achieved or be predicted 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4+ including Maths, English and Science plus two other subjects. For the first two years apprentices work day shifts between 07:00 and 20:00 Monday-Saturday; years 3 and 4 follow a 24/7 shift pattern.
