Clean aviaries, prepare food for flying demonstrations and learn the basics of handling birds of prey during a hands-on conservation placement. You may also spend time in the National Bird of Prey Hospital and help with demonstration gate duty.
The Hawk Conservancy Trust offers a limited number of work experience placements each year for students aged 16 and over. These placements are designed to give young people a deeper understanding of the Trust’s work, while building confidence and practical experience in a conservation and visitor attraction setting.
During the placement, students can expect a varied programme of hands-on tasks. This includes husbandry work such as cleaning aviaries, bays and water bowls, as well as general maintenance duties like raking leaves, cutting grass, sweeping paths and litter picking.
Students are also taught the basics of bird handling and may help prepare food for flying demonstrations.
Placements also provide opportunities to see other parts of the Trust’s work, including time in the National Bird of Prey Hospital, gate duty for demonstrations, and limited supervised handling of birds. Applicants should have a genuine interest in the Trust’s work, and successful candidates will be expected to maintain a professional standard of behaviour throughout.
The minimum placement length is two weeks, and students work Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm.
