Collect and record Hereford residents’ stories about local waterways and wetlands, with training in ethical oral history interviewing. Help shape a shared community archive by preparing questions, capturing high-quality audio or video, and supporting transcripts, cataloguing and archive work.
As a Volunteer Oral Historian, you will help collect and preserve personal stories from members of the community about the waterways and wetlands of Hereford. The role involves receiving training, then conducting and recording oral history interviews that capture lived experiences and add to a shared community archive.
Volunteers work with the project team to make sure interviews are carried out ethically, respectfully, and in line with recognised oral history best practice.
Main tasks include identifying potential interviewees, building rapport with people from different backgrounds, preparing questions around agreed themes, and recording high-quality audio or audio-visual interviews. You may also help with interview summaries, transcripts, cataloguing, archiving, and selecting extracts for exhibitions, publications, educational resources, podcasts, websites, or community events.
The project welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds and offers support throughout, making it a good opportunity for anyone interested in local history, heritage, communication, research, and community storytelling.
Unpaid volunteer role with full training and ongoing support provided.
Free to take part.
