Explore what caring for animals in a modern zoo involves through a work experience placement, or propose a research project at the zoo. Placements are limited each week, and the role can be physically demanding and involve exposure to allergens.

Hertfordshire Zoo offers work experience placements for people who want to explore a career in a zoo or in wildlife care. The placements are designed to give students insight into what it is like to care for animals in a modern zoo, and places are limited each week throughout the year.

Applicants are asked to read the placement information first, then complete the application form in full and return it by email. If the zoo has availability on the dates requested, applicants may be invited to interview, and a placement is only offered after a successful interview.

The zoo says demand is very high, so flexibility with dates increases the chance of success.

The wider research offer welcomes external researchers, including students, who want to carry out projects at the zoo. Researchers must complete the relevant application documents and have their proposal accepted before any data collection begins.

The zoo also asks applicants to consider health and fitness requirements, as the role can be physically demanding and includes exposure to allergens.
