Explore how local government works through a short-term placement in a council department that interests you. Build practical skills, develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving, and connect with professionals across different teams. Places are offered first come, first served.

Hillingdon Council’s School Work Experience Programme offers students the chance to explore local government through short-term placements across a wide range of departments. It is designed to give young people real-world experience, helping them build practical skills while learning how a council operates day to day.

During the placement, students can gain hands-on experience in an area that interests them, develop soft skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving, and network with professionals in different teams. The programme also aims to help participants make informed decisions about their future career path and strengthen college, university or job applications.

Students apply through an online form, and schools can also make an enquiry if they would like to arrange placements for their pupils. Places are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
