Dr Tony Rea traces the Devonshire Regiment’s expansion from its original structure and service across the Western Front, Italy, Salonika, Mesopotamia and the Holy Land. Explore its role in the retreat from Mons, Loos, the Somme and the German offensive of 1918.
This lecture explores the Devonshire Regiment’s experience during the First World War, beginning with its structure at the outbreak of war in August 1914 and tracing how it expanded by 1917. It considers the battalions’ service across several theatres of war, including the Western Front, Italy, Salonika, Mesopotamia and the Holy Land.
The presentation also examines the regiment’s involvement in major engagements such as the retreat from Mons, Loos, the Somme and the German offensive of 1918. It is a history-focused public talk delivered by Dr Tony Rea, a local historian with long-standing interests in the First World War and local history.
The event is organised by the Historical Association’s Plymouth branch and takes place at the University of Plymouth. Booking is via Eventbrite, with details to follow.
