Trace early modern Norwich through English, Dutch, French and Latin in a talk by Professor Christopher Joby. Explore how language shaped social life across Tudor, Stuart and early Georgian society.
Professor Christopher Joby gives a talk on how early modern Norwich can be studied through the use of four languages - English, Dutch, French and Latin - across different social domains. The session explores how language practices help illuminate society in Tudor, Stuart and early Georgian Norwich, drawing on material linked to his book *Multilingualism and the Early Modern City: Language and Society in Norwich (1500-1750)*.
The event is organised by the Historical Association’s Norwich branch and takes place at The UEA. It is a lecture-style event with Professor Joby listed as the speaker, and it is aimed at anyone interested in history, language, multilingualism and the early modern period.
Booking is by email to norwichha@gmail.com. Attendance is free for Historical Association and branch members, while guests pay £10.
