Explore royal clothes and fashion through the eyes of the Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art. Discover the unusual requirements and dress codes followed by royal queens, and how dress and symbolism shaped life at court.

Caroline De Guitaut, Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art, will give a lecture exploring royal clothes and fashion. Drawing on her long experience as an art historian and curator, she will discuss the extraordinary and often misunderstood elements that define the style of a female monarch, including the unusual requirements and very particular dress code followed by royal queens.

The talk is hosted by The Historical Association and is aimed at anyone interested in history, royal collections, decorative arts and the material culture of monarchy. It offers insight into the curatorial and conservation work behind one of the world’s most important collections, as well as the wider historical meanings of dress, fashion and symbolism at court.
