Trace how British monarchs have influenced intelligence - and sometimes steered it against prime ministers - in a talk led by Professor Richard Aldrich. Explore episodes from the abdication crisis and world wars to the Cold War and Princess Diana’s death.

This lecture explores the long and often hidden relationship between the British Royal Family and the intelligence community, from the reign of Queen Victoria through to the present day. It examines how monarchs have influenced British intelligence and, at times, steered it against the wishes of prime ministers.

The talk covers major moments in modern British history, including attempted assassinations and kidnappings, the abdication crisis, the world wars, the Cold War, and the death of Princess Diana. It is led by Professor Richard Aldrich and is an in-person event.
