Explore how 50 medieval Marcher Lordships were governed and why their laws, judicial authority, resources and military strength set them apart. Trace their role in the 200-year struggle for control of Wales, with a closer look at the Marcher Lordship of Gower.

This talk explores the medieval Marcher Lordships, a frontier region between England and Wales that sat politically and administratively between the two kingdoms. It looks at how the 50 lordships were governed, the powers held by the Marcher Lords, and the laws, judicial authority, resources and military strength that made these territories distinctive.

The session traces the origins and development of the Marcher Lordships within the wider 200-year struggle for control of Wales, with particular attention to the importance of the Marcher Lordship of Gower. It is a history-focused event organised by the Swansea Branch of the Historical Association and led by lecturer Philip Hume, suitable for anyone interested in medieval Welsh and English history.
