Follow the research into a ship’s captain who sailed round Cape Horn to Chile, then explore sailors’ dangers, nineteenth-century trade and copper smelting’s impact on Swansea. The talk connects one family story to the people and industry behind the city’s copper boom.
Carolyn Morgan will give a historical talk based on her research into her great-great-grandfather, who skippered ships round Cape Horn to Chile. Using that family story as a starting point, the session explores the realities of maritime life, the dangers faced by sailors, and the wider world of nineteenth-century trade.
The talk also looks at the social impact of copper smelting on the local community in Swansea, linking personal history with broader industrial and economic change. It is being delivered by the Swansea Branch of The Historical Association in partnership with the National Waterfront Museum, and is suitable for anyone interested in local history, shipping, industry, and the people who shaped the copper boom era.
