Hear an Oxford professor of English literature trace how the Iliad and Odyssey have shaped cultural debate across countries and centuries. This webinar series explores Greek and Roman myths through folklore, heritage, women and music, asking how ancient stories still shape history, literature and culture.
This winter webinar series explores the classical myths and stories that continue to shape how we understand history, literature and culture. The talks look at how the works of classical writers are still read, reinterpreted and debated, and how they reveal different moral codes, imaginary places and ideas from the ancient world.
The opening session features Henry Power, Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, speaking about his book Homer Haunted: The Many Afterlives of an Ancient Poet. His talk focuses on the Iliad and the Odyssey and how they have influenced cultural discourse across different countries and time periods.
The series is designed as a wider academic exploration of Greek and Roman mythology, folklore, cultural heritage, women and music, with further speakers from academia contributing additional talks later in the season. It will suit students and readers with an interest in history, classics and English literature, as well as anyone keen to understand how ancient stories continue to resonate today.
