This is a hands-on genetics workshop in which students will extract and test their own DNA using modern molecular biology techniques. Participants will test their phenotypic and genotypic ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) and will perform a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction digest and gel electrophoresis to analyse their DNA.
The session is designed to give degree-level practical laboratory experience to school students. The workshop takes place in the Urenco Young Scientist Centre’s teaching laboratory at The Royal Institution of Great Britain (21 Albemarle Street, London).
For safety reasons all participants must wear closed-toe shoes and tie back long hair. The event includes a 30-minute unsupervised lunch break-students should bring their own lunch and a drink. This session is intended for students who have just completed Years 12 and 13.
Refunds are available only for tickets cancelled at least 14 calendar days before the event. If you have questions about the practical activities (including DNA extraction) please contact the organisers before booking.
