Explore how HTLV integrates into human cells with Professor Goedele Maertens, then hear how her lab is investigating whether existing HIV drugs could prevent HTLV transmission.

Join Professor Goedele Maertens, Professor of Retrovirology at Imperial College London, for an inaugural lecture exploring how her research is helping to uncover the mechanisms behind HTLV infection and persistence. The talk looks at how this neglected retrovirus integrates into human cells, why it can cause severe and sometimes life-threatening disease, and how it compares with HIV in terms of viral behaviour.

Professor Maertens will also discuss her laboratory’s work on repurposing existing HIV drugs as a potential way to prevent HTLV transmission. The lecture brings together insights from proteomics, molecular virology, microscopy and structural biology, showing how different scientific approaches can be combined to tackle an important global health challenge.

This event is part of Imperial Inaugurals, a term-time lecture series celebrating newly appointed professors and showcasing their research. It is suitable for anyone interested in virology, infectious disease and medical research, with the option to attend in person or follow online via live stream.
