Explore how proton beam therapy brings cancer treatment and particle physics together, from radiotherapy’s role to the accelerators that produce the beams. See why their precision matters for deep-lying tumours in the head, neck and central nervous system.
This public lecture explores how proton beam therapy brings together cancer treatment and particle physics. It looks at the mechanisms behind cancer, the role of radiotherapy, and why protons can offer advantages over conventional treatment by delivering radiation more precisely to tumours.
The talk also explains the particle accelerators used to produce the proton beams and why this approach is especially significant for treating deep-lying tumours in areas such as the head, neck and central nervous system. It is suitable for the general public, students and anyone with an interest in the topic, and is part of the IOP London and South East general public physics talk series.
