Explore how lasers detect ultrasound in metals, then discover a newer way to ‘see’ sound using liquid crystals. Professor Rachel Edwards connects this physics to smart paints and quicker, easier testing methods.

This public physics talk explores new ways of generating and detecting ultrasound. It looks at how electricity and magnetism can be used to create ultrasound in metals, and how lasers can be used to detect it.

The session also introduces a newer approach to ‘seeing sound’ using liquid crystals, with possible applications in smart paints and quicker, easier testing methods.

The event is led by Professor Rachel Edwards MInstP of the University of Warwick, whose research focuses on ultrasound and how sound waves travel through materials. It is a university-based lecture suited to anyone interested in physics, applied science, materials, and engineering, and it offers an engaging look at how fundamental research can lead to practical uses in safety, maintenance, and structural inspection.
