Talk with patients, serve teas and coffees, help make beds or escort people around hospital. You’ll get general training, with extra where needed, and build confidence through a regular volunteer role of at least three hours a week for six months.
Isle of Wight NHS Trust’s volunteering programme gives people the chance to support patients and staff across its services, helping to improve the experience of care in the hospital. Volunteers contribute their time and energy to a role that can be both rewarding and fun, while also building confidence, experience and new skills.
Typical tasks vary depending on the area, but may include talking to patients, making teas and coffees, helping to make beds, signposting people to services, and escorting patients around the hospital. The role is designed for people who are friendly, reliable, have a sense of humour and genuinely want to help others; specialist skills are not usually needed, as full general training is provided, along with additional training where required.
Volunteers choose how much time they can offer, with a regular commitment expected. The Trust asks for a minimum of 3 hours a week and at least 6 months’ involvement. Volunteers are unpaid apart from travel expenses.
Applicants must be at least 16, and those under 18 need parental or guardian consent.
Ongoing volunteering
Unpaid, apart from travel expenses.
